Professor Datin Dr. Clara L Chee (SMEs Brand Personality Award)

Way back in 1977 at a time when the beauty industry was not seen as a serious business in Malaysia, an enterprising and visionary young woman called Clara Chee started her own beauty salon. In her own right, even then Clara’s beauty salon is recognised as a pioneer in the beauty industry of Malaysia. From just providing the basic regime in beauty treatment to women only, the business has grown and expanded to what is now known as the Clara International Beauty Group.

The Group’s success is attributed to the keen interest in helping people address their skin care problems as well as the far-sightedness of their founder in wanting to produce her own brand of beauty treatment products. And this attribute has earned her a doctorate award in this field of studies. Having led the business to where it is, Datin Professor Dr. Clara Chee now sits as the Chairperson of the Group.

Clara International is not only known as a pioneer in skin care, they are also acknowledged as a true leader of the industry - going beyond the Malaysian borders and breaking new grounds in almost every facet of the beauty and wellness industry. The Group also produces and market their brand of beauty treatment products.
Clara Chee is almost a legendary icon in the local cosmetic industry much like Florence Nightingale in the nursing industry. She is where she is today because of her willingness to work hard and her perseverance in continuously innovating new products for the past 27 years to make her clients happy.
“We are living in a tropical climate,” she said. “For this reason, our cosmetic products must suit our environment and the Asian skin type.”Before starting her business, she had worked as a Beauty Consultant. From 1967 to 1975, she had worked as a Cosmetic Marketing Surveyor. In 1973, she joined MAX factor in Kuala Lumpur.”
With only a capital of RM40 000, Clara International was birthed in 1977. “With a CGC Bank Loan from Maybank, I started my first salon with the help of two other friends from the United Kingdom and two qualified aestheticians in a rented shoplot in SS2, Petaling Jaya,” she said.

Tan Sri Mustapha Kamal Abu (Founder of Emkay Group) : RM 1.174 billion

It was a very special evening for him and the Emkay Group, which he founded in 1983. The abundance of good food, entertainment and even a one-minute display of fireworks celebrated three official launches — the Menara Mustapha Kamal office tower, the Emkay gallery, and the Building Passion with Mustapha Kamal book — to mark Emkay’s 26-year journey as aproperty developer.
The towering 21-storey Menara Mustapha Kamal, said MK, is a monument of Emkay’s achievements. Also, it houses the entire group under the same roof for the first time.
Since its inception 26 years ago, Emkay has built properties amounting to more than RM8 billion in value, the bulk of which were affordable homes, according to MK, dubbed ‘The King of Affordable Homes’, in his welcoming speech.
The Bumiputera property magnate shared the ‘secret’ of his success, the driving force that kept him going when challenges came his way.
`The fear of failure,’ MK revealed to the 530 guests present.
`I could not afford to fail. My family depended on me. The livelihood of my staff, and their families, depended on the company. And most importantly, my greatest fear was that people would point to my failure and say that Malays could never succeed,’ he shared.

Former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, who officiated the event that night, hailed MK as a `shining example’ of successful Malay entrepreneurship, and commended him on his attitude of tahu malu (knowing how to be ashamed).
`I am proud of Mustapha Kamal’s attitude. He took full advantage of the opportunities opened to him (as a Bumiputera), but unlike others, he never abused them. He was not interested in the “get rich quick” route. He knew how to be malu (ashamed),’ said Dr Mahathir.
MK’s 26-year journey with Emkay is documented in the book Building Passion with Mustapha Kamal as well as the Emkay Gallery located at the lobby floor of Menara Mustapha Kamal.
The book, wrote author Cheah Chor Sooi in the preface, was originally meant as a biography, ‘but being an individual who despises the act of self-praise, it was decided that this book would only focus on MK’s business philosophy and management methods‘.
“The book is based on my experience, not on theory. With what we have gone through and experienced, I sincerely believe that we can humbly share some thoughts on how we have managed to keep the Emkay Group agile all this while and sustain it to what it is today. If what I say is in line with the management gurus, Alhamdulilah (Praise God), if not, so what?” MK said candidly.
The 3,063 square feet Emkay Gallery, meanwhile, features five sections: The Journey, The Mission, The Passion, The Love, and The Legacy. The gallery, which cost RM1.5 million to set up, is open to the public from Nov 1. Entrance is free.
Menara Mustapha Kamal is a 21-storey office tower with a total built-up space of 201,508 sq ft. The Emkay Group occupies six floors while the remaining available space will be rented out. The tower, purchased at RM85 million, is one of the four towers of the PJ Trade Centre, Damansara Perdana. It was developed by Tujuan Gemilang Sdn Bhd, a company helmed by MK’s heir apparent Ahmad Khalif Mustapha Kamal.
Emkay has come a long way since its first major breakthrough project: Bandar Baru Sungai Buloh. As it continues to grow, MK will make sure Emkay will always be driven by his vision of ‘Building a Better Tomorrow Today‘.

Ananda Krishnan, or AK, as he is also known, is a man of humble
beginnings.

The son of a senior clerk in the civil service, this determined character achieved world renowned success which began with education at the Victoria Institution in Kuala Lumpur.
He then pursued his studies at Melbourne University in Australia, where he was introduced to horses by his college mates, as all his friends' fathers bred horses.
It was said that his first business venture while still a student at the

He took part in plays, one of them the Merchant of Venice, and a biweekly discussion programme over radio.

Although he has been hugely successful in business, he has remembered others of lesser means.
More recently in June, companies under him pledged RM160 million to various education funds in the country.
Even though there are many words to describe Ananda Krishnan, at the top of it all is Malaysian.

HE IS a survivor by all accounts. He escaped death in a horrific car crash many years ago. He faced his baptism of fire in the corporate world duringthe property crash of 1985. And he managed to wriggle his way out of the deepest recession the Malaysian economy ever experienced in 1998.
Tan Sri Azman Hashim is the comeback kid of Malaysian banking. At the height of the currency crisis, he almost lost his banking empire. Under the central bank-driven banking consolidation programme, Azman's bank was to be swallowed by a smaller financial group. However, Azman managed to convince the authorities to give his group anchor bank status. In the aftermath of the financial crisis, the Arab-Malaysian group's financial arm rebounded strongly. Its strong performance paved the way for Azman to package a restructuring scheme to address the group's RM1.4 billion debts. Creditors approved the scheme in January last year. Azman's personal debts, which in 1998 was said to be about RM600 million, has alsobeen reduced to a more manageable level.
An affable character, the 61-year-old Azman controls six listed companies through his flagship, Arab-Malaysian Corporation Bhd. He honed his banking skills 40 years ago when he joined Bank Negara at age 21. An accountant by training, Azman was appointed to the board of Malayan Banking Bhd (Maybank), the leading bank in the country, in 1966. At 31, he became its executive director, a post he held until 1980. After a two-year stint in Kwong Yik Bank (Maybank's subsidiary), Azman bought Arab- Malaysian Merchant Bank in April 1982. Azman gradually built up that acquisition into a financial supermarket.
He also ventured into property development, which has proved to be a bane to the group in times of recession. With a penchant for fast cars, water sports and snorkelling, Azman also sings and has cut a few albums together with his wife.

Tan Sri Syed Mokhtar al-Bukhary : $1.7 billion (MMC)

Tan Sri Syed Mokhtar Al-Bukhary is one of the most prominent Malaysia entrepreneurs and is popular with his generosity and philanthropic deeds for the society. He is also known for his down-to-earth attitude, and a guy who as much as possible, avoids publicity, cameras and interviews, which at times can be an overwhelming task, considering his status quo as one of the 10 richest men in the country.

Much of Syed Mokhtar’s attitude is attributed with his parents’ upbringing since he was still a small kid. He was born into a mid-low class family in Kedah, with both his parents having average income background. Being nowhere near to living a wealthy life style did not stop his father and mother from instilling good values in raising their kid. Their home came without necessities, let alone luxuries. Syed Mokhtar himself never went beyond the secondary school, as the prevailing family condition forced him to quit schooling and help family by doing odd jobs and starting small scale businesses.

Syed Mokhtar started his real business in the southern Malaysia, selling and distributing rice. With the acquired knowledge and increase in his entrepreneurship skills, he later ventured into trading, logistics and shipping. His mother’s advice to treat part of the money he received as belonging to the poor and the needy remains at the core of his heart. True enough, when he was merely 23 years old, he gave away half of his monthly income of RM1,500 to the needy, donating it to 15 poor families in his village. He has never stopped giving since.

In 1996, Syed Mokhtar set up Al-Bukhary Foundation to assist the needy, with him as the sole donator. The foundation finances English, Science and Mathematics classes for more than 20,000 underachieving students every year, as well as running a college scholarship program for 300 students in more than 40 countries. Between 1996 and 2006, the Al-Bukhary Foundation has contributed about 1 billion for various charity causes.

The foundation also built the famous and gigantic Al-Bukhary mosque in Alor Setar, Kedah, adjacent to a business complex, which today becomes a prominent landmark in Kedah with its remarkable architecture.

In January 2008, Syed Mokhtar was honored as the recipient of the Tokoh Maal Hijrah 1429. And owing his success to his mother’s teachings, he decided to give the cash award of RM80,000 to his mother, Sharifah Rokiah Syed Mohamed Rahmat.
